Microneedling
Medical and Cosmetic Microneedling
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a therapeutic treatment in which an electric pen device delivers tiny needle pricks to the skin. Microneedling stimulates the skin’s natural healing response which can improve the appearance of fine lines and scars by stimulating collagen and other natural growth factors.
What is the difference between cosmetic vs. medical Microneedling?
The main difference between cosmetic vs. medical Microneedling is the depth in which the needles penetrate. Cosmetic Microneedling is a shallow treatment designed to brighten the skin and improve the penetration of product. This treatment is great for maintenance and prevention of skin’s texture, tone and strength. Medical Microneedling aims to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, correct hyperpigmentation and melasma, and improve the appearance of scars, by driving the needles into the deeper layers of skin.
What is the recovery time?
With cosmetic Microneedling there is no recovery time involved. Some redness immediately after treatment can be visible, but resolves the same day. Some bruising, swelling and redness for 2-4 days can be expected with medical Microneedling. The deeper the treatment, the more recovery time can be expected. It is also important to avoid using makeup and heavy products until the following day after treatment. Frequent application of sunscreen following treatments is important to avoid hyperpigmentation.
How often should Microneedling be done?
With both cosmetic and medical Microneedling, a series of treatments is recommended. Generally 4-6 treatments spaced every 2-4 weeks is necessary for the best results. Regular application of serums at home following treatments is also recommended.
