How does the IPL
photofacial work?

As opposed to other laser treatments that use a single light wavelength, IPL (intense pulsed light) treatment uses broad-spectrum light to address a variety of skin-related concerns. The scattered quality of IPL’s broad spectrum light pulses allows for deeper tissue penetration than focused laser treatment.

During treatment, pigment cells absorb the light energy and convert it into heat. The relationship between pigment and heat production allows for the lightening of dark spots, freckles, lesions, or other pigment-related issues. The IPL photofacial process also stimulates collagen production and fights acne-causing bacteria to improve skin clarity, texture, and elasticity.

IPL photofacial benefits

IPL Photofacial treatment offers multifaceted skin improvement in target areas. Broad-spectrum light pulses produce improvements in skin tone, evenness, elasticity, texture, pore size, scars (including acne scars), active acne, wrinkles, freckles, rosacea, spider veins, vascular lesions, and redness.

IPL therapy can treat nearly any area of the body. Because of its benefits, it is most commonly applied to areas of the body that receive regular sun exposure such as the face, arms, hands, legs, chest, and neck.

Am I a Candidate?

IPL Photofacial is an excellent treatment option for patients with light, untanned skin who would like to improve the evenness, tone, texture, elasticity, or clarity of their skin. Unfortunately, IPL therapy may not be an ideal option for patients with darker skin tones due to the risk of discoloration caused by treatment.

IPL Photofacial Procedure and Recovery

This pulsed light treatment is used to reduce hyperpigmentation from sun damage and age spots. The treatment will stimulate collagen production and even the skin tone. Optimal results require 2 to 4 treatments. Each treatment is done in the office and takes about 15-30 minutes. Recovery time is very minimal.

Redness may occur immediately after the procedure, but is easily coverable with makeup. Most patients are able to return to their daily activities directly after treatment. The dark spots rise to the surface over the course of one week and flake off gradually. A skin regimen can be carried out at home to maintain results.

IPL Photofacial Results

You will likely notice a difference in treated skin about one week after each session. However, your results will continue to develop for three to six months after your last treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the risks and side effects?

While IPL therapy is non-invasive and easily tolerated in most cases, there are some side effects that may occur following treatment. The most common side effects include redness, swelling, bruising, blisters, crusting, brown spots, and blemishes. If you experience any crusting or blisters, it is important that you do not pick at them and contact the office for an evaluation.

What should I not do after my IPL Photofacial?

There are some things that you should avoid following each session to ensure the best results. For the first 48 hours after treatment, it is important that you do not immerse your skin in hot water (including hot tubs, showers, and baths). For the same amount of time, you should avoid strenuous exercise.

For one week after treatment, you should not exfoliate or apply harsh chemicals to your treated skin. This also includes products with high concentrations of vitamin A. Lastly, you should not expose your skin to the sun without protection for a minimum of 30 days after treatment.

What should I do after my IPL treatment?

Following your treatment, you should cleanse your skin twice daily with warm water and apply sunscreen (30 SPF minimum). You should also use a gentle moisturizer to prevent your skin from becoming too dry.
